The first ISAF Sailing World Champions – Cascais 2007 have been found. In the Star, Brazilians Robert Scheidt-Bruno Prada and Spaniards Fernando Echevarri-Anton Paz in Tornado.

It was a terrible day for the Sailing World Championship fleets. The infamous “northerly” decided to come to stay and the winds were blowing so hard as to prevent any races being held.

The organizers made a last-ditch effort to stage the Medal Races in the Star class, but strong winds stopped it being carried through. Thus, Roberto Scheidt-Bruno Prada earned the right to wear the gold star on his sail. Frenchmen Xavier Rohart-Pascal Rambeau were second and Britain’s Iain Percy-Andrew Simpson finished in third.

The Tornados had to remain on the beach and did not get to make it out onto the water. Spain’s Fernando Echevarri-Anton Paz have been crowned world champions, followed by Carolijn Brouwer-Sebastien Godefroid, of Belgium, and Mithc Booth—Pim Nieuwenhuis, of Holland.

As the race could not be held, the Portuguese ended up qualifying their country for Beijing 2008 in the Men’s RS:X class and in Laser. Gustavo Lima will feature in tomorrow’s Medal Race.
